Como Aprendi 4 Línguas

Estamos começando um novo ano e uma nova década! Eu gosto muito desta época do ano porque eu vejo o início de um novo ano como o início de uma nova etapa em minha vida. É um bom momento para refletir sobre nossas metas de vida e planejar para que consigamos alcançar nossas metas.

1. Português

Eu vou começar falando sobre o português, que é minha língua nativa, minha língua materna. Eu nasci no Brasil e morei lá toda a minha vida até me mudar a Nova Iorque em 2013. Eu sou casada com um brasileiro, então mesmo morando em Nova Iorque, eu só falo português em casa.

A língua portuguesa não é apenas a minha língua materna, é também a minha formação, minha paixão e minha profissão. Eu estudei língua e literatura de língua portuguesa na Universidade de São Paulo e hoje eu sou muito feliz por ter a oportunidade de ensinar a minha linda língua a pessoas de todo o mundo.

2. English

Agora, vou falar sobre a minha segunda língua, que é o inglês. Comecei a aprender inglês quando eu era muito nova, quando eu tinha 8 ou 10 anos, graças à minha mãe que me matriculou em escolas de idiomas no Brasil. Mas nunca fui realmente fluente em inglês até me mudar para os EUA em 2013.

Infelizmente, não falamos muito inglês no Brasil. Pouquíssimas pessoas falam. Então, quando eu morava no Brasil, eu não praticava meu inglês.

Quando me mudei para os EUA, falar inglês foi um grande desafio para mim. Eu conseguia entender bem, mas não conseguia falar. No começo, eu tinha vergonha do meu sotaque brasileiro forte e não tinha confiança para falar. E para piorar, sou introvertida, então sair e conversar com pessoas não é realmente o meu forte.

O que realmente me ajudou a superar essa barreira foram os professores que encontrei no YouTube. Sério! Minha favorita é a Rachel’s English. Ela é maravilhosa. Eu fui aluna dela por alguns anos.

Ela me ajudou muito a entender a pronúncia do inglês americano e me deu confiança para falar. Eu sei que ainda tenho um sotaque brasileiro forte, e tudo bem. Estou feliz com meu sotaque agora.

Não estou interessada em falar exatamente como os americanos falam. Eu não sou americana, sou brasileira, então eu devo soar como uma brasileira. Tenho orgulho da minha origem e sotaque, então não quero mudar isso.

Eu sempre digo aos meus alunos para não se preocuparem muito com o sotaque deles, ou se eles estão cometendo erros ao falar português porque ninguém se importa. Até falantes nativos cometem erros o tempo todo (pelo menos os brasileiros cometem).

Para mim, o objetivo de aprender uma língua estrangeira não é soar exatamente como um nativo, mas sim se comunicar com sucesso com falantes nativos. Então, se você pode entender e ser entendido, pronto, esse é o objetivo, certo?

Eu divaguei um pouco. Vamos voltar à minha jornada de aprendizado.

Para levar meu inglês para o próximo nível, decidi fazer cursos de inglês e literatura na universidade, e me formei em inglês e escrita criativa pelo Hunter College. Foi uma experiência incrível.

Se você tem um bom nível de inglês ou qualquer outro idioma, fazer cursos com falantes nativos vai realmente desafiá-lo e o ajudá-lo a melhorar.

3. Français

Et maintenant, le français! Le français est ma troisième langue. J’étudie le français depuis plus au moins dix ans. Pour moi, le français est la plus belle langue du monde. J’adore le français. J’adore sa sonorité.

Ça me fait beaucoup de plaisir parler en français et écouter le français. J’aime aussi la littérature française. J’ai étudié la littérature française à la Fac au Brésil et aussi à l’université ici, aux États-Unis.

J’ai commencé à étudier le français avec mon ami, Dominique. Il habitait à São Paulo, à l’époque.

J’ai étudié avec lui pendant environ 3 ans, je pense. En outre, je suis allée en France quelques fois et aussi au Québec pour étudier le français.

Quand j’habitais au Brésil, le français étais ma deuxième langue, parce que je pratiquais beaucoup avec mes amis, mais après avoir déménagé à New York, cela a changé.

Malheureusement, comme tout le monde, je n’ai pas beaucoup d’opportunités pour pratiquer le français. Donc, aujourd’hui, j’utilise les ressources que je trouve sur internet.

Mon prof préféré sur YouTube est Johan Tekfak, le créateur de Français Authentique. J’adore sa chaîne et son podcast parce qu’il parle 100% en français, mais il parle doucement. Donc, son contenu est très utile pour les étudiants de niveau intermédiaire.

J’ai aussi une prof de français qui me donne des cours particuliers de temps en temps. Elle s’appelle Yasmine Lesire. Elle est la directrice de l’école Ilearnfrench.eu. Yasmine est vraiment merveilleuse.

4. Español

Ahora voy a hablar en español. El español es mi cuarto idioma. Puedo entender muy bien el español y puedo hablar un poco sobre cosas simples, pero no puedo hablar sobre cosas más complejas.

Estudié español en Argentina en 2003 cuando viví allá durante unos meses. Tuve clases particulares, pero creo que aprendí más escuchando y charlando con mis amigos. Cuando vivía en Brasil, iba a Buenos Aires todos los años porque está muy cerca de São Paulo y me encanta Buenos Aires.

Hace muchos años que no voy a Argentina, pero he estado en México algunas veces, y cada vez que voy allá trato de hablar un poquito en español.

Me gustaría hablar español un poco mejor, pero he priorizado el inglés y el francés. No estudio español regularmente, pero estudio un poco. Me gusta mucho un podcast llamado Unlimited Spanish con el profesor Oscar. ¡Es muy bueno! ¡Es re-bueno! Como dirían mis amigos argentinos.

Un problema para los hispanohablantes cuando hablan portugués y también para los brasileños que hablan español es que los dos idiomas son muy similares.

Esto nos ayuda a comprender, ¡pero hablar es otra cosa!

Muchas veces, cuando hablo español, no estoy segura si estoy hablando español o portugués. ¡Así que creo que muchas veces hablo el famoso portuñol!

Bueno, creo que es cuestión de práctica.

É isso, pessoal! Estas são as 4 línguas nas quais eu consigo me comunicar.

Para mim, foi difícil gravar este vídeo, porque eu me sinto um pouco insegura falando línguas estrangeiras em frente à câmera, e obviamente, eu sei que eu não falo essas línguas perfeitamente, mas tudo bem.

Para mim, quando eu aprendo uma nova língua, meu objetivo não é falar perfeitamente e sim me comunicar, me divertir, aprender coisas novas e ser feliz. É claro que eu procuro sempre melhorar, mas sem me estressar.

Eu sempre procuro não me preocupar muito com os erros e sempre celebrar os acertos. Eu recomendo que você faça o mesmo.

How I Learned 4 Languages

Many of you have asked me to record a video speaking the foreign languages I’ve learned. So today, I’ll share with you, in 4 different languages, how I learned to speak 4 languages: Portuguese, which is my mother tongue, English, French and Spanish. Want to know more? Continue watching.

1. Portuguese

I’ll start by talking about Portuguese, which is my native language, my mother tongue. I was born in Brazil and lived there all my life until I moved to New York in 2013. I’m married to a Brazilian, so even living in New York, I only speak Portuguese at home.

The Portuguese language is not only my mother tongue, it’s also my academic education, my passion and my profession. I studied Portuguese language and literature at the University of São Paulo and today I’m very happy to have the opportunity to teach my beautiful language to people from all over the world.

2. English

Now, I’m going to talk about my second language, which is English. I started learning English when I was very young, when I was about 8 or 10 years old, thanks to my mother who enrolled me in language schools in Brazil. But I was never really fluent in English until I moved to the US in 2013.

Unfortunately, we don’t speak much English in Brazil. Very few people do. So, when I lived in Brazil, I didn’t practice my English at all. When I moved to the US, speaking English was a huge challenge for me. I could understand well, but I couldn’t speak.

In the beginning, I was ashamed of my thick Brazilian accent and I didn’t have any confidence to speak. And to make it worse, I’m an introvert, so hanging out and talking to people is not really my thing.

What really helped me to overcome this barrier were teachers that I found on YouTube. Really! My favorite one is Rachel’s English. She is amazing. I was her student for a couple of years.

She helped me so much to understand American English pronunciation and gave me confidence to speak. I know I still have a thick Brazilian accent, and that’s ok. I’m happy with my accent now. I’m not interested in speaking exactly like Americans speak. I’m not American, I’m Brazilian, so I should sound like a Brazilian. I’m proud of my origin and my accent, so I don’t want to change that.

I always tell my students to not worry too much with their accent, or if they are making mistakes when speaking Portuguese because nobody cares. Even native speakers make mistakes all the time (at least Brazilians do).

To me, the goal of learning a foreign language is not to sound exactly like a native but to successfully communicate with native speakers. So, if you can understand and be understood, that’s it, that’s the goal, right?I’ve digressed a little bit. Let’s come back to my learning journey.

To take my English to the next level, I decided to take English and literature courses at the university, and I got a degree in English and Creative Writing from Hunter College. It was an amazing experience.

If you have a good level of English, or any other language, taking courses with native speakers will really challenge you and help you improve.

3. French

And now, French! French is my third language. I’ve been studying French for about ten years. For me, French is the most beautiful language in the world. I love French. I love the way it sounds.

I really enjoy speaking French and listening to French. I also like French literature. I studied French literature in College in Brazil and also in the university here, in the United States.

I started studying French with my friend, Dominique. He lived in São Paulo at the time. I studied with him for about 3 years, I think. In addition, I’ve been to France a few times and also to Québec to study French.

When I lived in Brazil, French was my second language, because I practiced a lot with my friends, but after moving to New York, that changed.

Unfortunately, like everyone else, I don’t have many opportunities to practice French. So today, I use the resources I find on the internet.

My favorite teacher on YouTube is Johan Tekfak, the creator of Français Authentique. I love his channel and his podcast because he speaks 100% in French, but he speaks slowly. So, its content is very useful for intermediate level students.

I also have a French teacher who meets me for private lessons from time to time. Her name is Yasmine Lesire. She is the director of the school Ilearnfrench.eu. Yasmine is really wonderful.

4. Spanish

Now I’ll speak Spanish. Spanish is my fourth language. I can understand Spanish very well and I can speak a little about simple things, but I can’t speak about more complex things.

I studied Spanish in Argentina in 2003 when I lived there for a few months. I had private lessons, but I think I learned more by listening and chatting with my friends. When I lived in Brazil, I would go to Buenos Aires every year because it’s very close to São Paulo and I love Buenos Aires.

I’ve not been to Argentina for many years, but I’ve been to Mexico a few times, and every time I go there, I try to speak a little Spanish.

I would like to speak Spanish a little better, but I have prioritized English and French. I don’t study Spanish regularly, but I study a little. I really like a podcast called Unlimited Spanish with Professor Oscar. It’s very good! It’s good! As my Argentinian friends would say.

A problem for Spanish speakers when speaking Portuguese and also for Brazilians who speak Spanish is that the two languages ​​are very similar. This helps us understand, but talking is something else!

Many times, when I speak Spanish, I am not sure if I am speaking Spanish or Portuguese. So, I think that many times I speak the famous Portuñol! Well, I think it’s a matter of practice.

That’s it, guys! These are the 4 languages in which I can communicate.

It was hard for me to record this video because I feel a little insecure speaking foreign languages in front of the camera, and obviously, I know that I don’t speak these languages perfectly, but that’s ok.

For me, when I learn a new language, my goal is not to speak perfectly but to communicate, have fun, learn new things and be happy.

Of course, I always aim to improve, but without stress.

I always try not to worry too much about mistakes and always celebrate the wins. I recommend that you do the same.
