Hi everyone, Virginia here.
Today, I’m going to have a conversation with my friend from Rio Grande do Sul, Beatriz Cunha. The other day, we were talking about couchsurfingand I loved the idea! So, I invited her to talk with us about it. So, let’s go!
Virginia: What is this event that you came to attend here in Austin?
Beatriz: So, I went to South by Southwest,which is an event that mixes both aspects of innovation and technology and also music, films and movies, right? So, since my work is more linked to technology and the financial world, for me it made more sense the first part of the event, right?
So, it’s a huge event. There are five thousand lectures going on, many of them simultaneously, for ten days. And it’s spread all over the city. It’s really amazing. Lots of things happening at the same time.
Virginia: And you told me you were couchsurfingin Austin. Tell me how that experience was.
Beatriz: So, couchsurfingis a community of people who like to travel and want to stay at a local person’s house and share an experience with that person. So, a similar model, let’s say it’s an Airbnb, but in couchsurfing,there’s no money involved, right?
So, you really choose a person, to stay at her/his house and you look at her/his profile, see the reviews, who already stayed in that person’s house and you choose like that. And the cool part is you really sharing some experience.
So, you can choose to stay in someone’s house, this person will show you the city, give you tips, share experiences of other trips that this person has already made. So, more or less, this is the community. At least for me, it has that sense, you know? It is much more than just saving money with the trip. It is also about sharing these experiences.
So, I decided to stay in Austin through couchsurfing, and it was super cool. I stayed at the house of a guy who is Thai, actually, and he’s now living in Austin. And he hosts people. He had already hosted more than sixty people, now, when I went to his house.
It’s a very simple scheme. If he has a sofa or an air mattress or something like that, so that a person can sleep on it, then he can offer the house to people to stay there. So, in his case it was an air mattress, which was ok, it was good. He was super kind to me. So, he helped me, took me to the center of the city, showed me some places, showed me a coffee shop he liked.
So, that’s what is cool from the experience. I got to know a bit of Austin from the perspective of someone who lives there, right?
Virginia:I loved it! Very cool! And have you done this before or was this your first time?
Beatriz:This was the first time alone. I had already done this with an ex-boyfriend in Paris and Cologne, Germany. And it was very interesting, it was very interesting too. But now it’s the first time I do this by myself, really.
Virginia:You get butterflies in your stomach, right? Staying at the house of a person you don’t know. But I think the reviews help.
Beatriz: Totally. So, I read all the reviews to see if anyone had said anything weird. And no, everything was fine. He’s a nice person, super well-recommended. People said that he was wonderful, that it was an amazing stay, and then I, well, so he probably must be really a nice person, right? So, people are scared, but I think this reviews system works great, right?
Virginia: Yes, that’s true. That way you know the real opinion of people who already know that person, that host. And you also host people at your place!
Beatriz: Yes!
Virginia: And how is that experience? Have you hosted many people at home?
Beatriz: Yeah. I hosted six, seven people. It was not as much as the Thai guy. But each experience was more interesting than the other, you know? I’ve hosted people very different from each other, of different nationalities.
I’ve already hosted an American girl, a guy from Turkey, a Spanish girl who had traveled the entire world, Brazilians too, from São Paulo, from Minas Gerais, and I don’t even remember. But, anyway, people come from very different places.
And I actually started doing this because I discovered it through a friend. He would host people and sometimes I would go to his house and, “hey, there’s a French man here.”
Virginia: There’s a person, out of nowhere.
Beatriz: A French, or “there’s a Colombian who came here to stay a few days”. Then I met these people and I, “Oh, how cool is that!” And then I started to see, ah, okay, you don’t need to have a super structure to have that kind of experience. If you have a sofa or a mattress, that’s great for these people. So, I saw that I could do this too because I had an air mattress, and I had a room available, so I could do this. Then I started hosting people.
Then the first time was kind of like, I was a little scared, you know? I hadn’t hosted anyone yet. Then I hosted a carioca, and it was super cool. It was pretty cool. The girl was very nice. Anyway, it was, a lot of cool experiences.

Hoje, eu vou ter um bate-papo com a minha amiga gaúcha, Beatriz Cunha. Outro dia, nós estávamos falando sobre couchsurfinge eu achei o máximo! Então, eu convidei ela pra conversar sobre isso com a gente. Então, vamos lá!
Virginia: Que evento é esse que você veio participar aqui em Austin?
Beatriz: Então, eu fui pro South by Southwest,que é um evento que ele mistura tanto a parte de inovação e tecnologia quanto música e a parte de filmes e cinema, né? Então, como o meu trabalho é mais ligado à tecnologia e mundo financeiro, pra mim fazia mais sentido essa primeira parte do evento, né?
Então, é um evento enorme. Tem cinco mil palestras acontecendo, muitas delas simultâneas, durante dez dias. E ele é espalhado por toda a cidade. É realmente muito incrível. Muitas coisas acontecendo ao mesmo tempo.
Virginia: E você me disse que você estava fazendo couchsurfingem Austin. Me conta como que foi essa experiência.
Beatriz: Então, o couchsurfingé uma comunidade de pessoas que gostam de viajar e que querem se hospedar na casa de uma pessoa local e compartilhar uma experiência com essa pessoa. Então, um modelo mais parecido, digamos que é um Airbnb, só que no couchsurfing não tem dinheiro envolvido, né?
Então, tu realmente escolhe uma pessoa, pra tu ficar na casa dela e tu olha o perfil dela, vê as avaliações, quem já ficou na casa dessa pessoa e escolhe por aí. E o legal é tu realmente compartilhar alguma experiência.
Então, tu pode escolher ficar na casa de alguém, essa pessoa vai te mostrar a cidade, te dar as dicas, compartilhas experiências de outras viagens que essa pessoa já fez. Então, mais ou menos é isso a comunidade, né. Pelo menos para mim, tem esse sentido, né. É muito mais do que só economizar com a viagem. É também compartilhar essas experiências.
Então, eu decidi ficar em Austin através do couchsurfing, e foi super legal. Eu fiquei na casa de um menino que ele é tailandês, na verdade, e está morando agora em Austin. E ele recebe pessoas. Ele já tinha recebido mais de sessenta pessoas, agora quando eu fui na casa dele.
É um esquema bem simples, assim. Se ele tem um sofá ou um colchão inflável ou algo do tipo que a pessoa possa dormir, então ele pode oferecer a casa pra pessoa ficar lá. Então, no caso dele era um colchão inflável, que era ok, era bom. Ele foi super querido comigo. Então, me ajudou, me levou até o centro da cidade, me mostrou alguns lugares, mostrou um café que ele gostava.
Então, isso que é legal da experiência. Eu conheci um pouco de Austin na visão de alguém que mora lá, né?
Virginia: Adorei! Muito legal! E você já fez isso outras vezes ou essa foi a sua primeira vez?
Beatriz: Essa foi a primeira vez sozinha. Eu já tinha feito isso com um ex-namorado em Paris e em Colônia, na Alemanha. E foi bem interessante, foi bem interessante também. Mas agora é a primeira vez indo sozinha, mesmo.
Virginia: Dá um frio na barriga, né? Ficar na casa uma pessoa que você não conhece. Mas acho que os reviews ajudam.
Beatriz: Totalmente. Então, eu li todos os reviewspra ver se ninguém tinha falado alguma coisa estranha. E não, estava tudo tranquilo. É uma pessoa legal, super bem avaliado. As pessoas diziam que ele era maravilhoso, que foi uma estadia incrível, e daí eu, bom, então provavelmente ele deve ser uma pessoa realmente legal, né? Então, as pessoas têm medo, mas eu acho que esse sistema de reviewsele funciona bastante, né?
Virginia: Sim, é verdade. Que daí você sabe a opinião real de pessoas que já conhecem aquela pessoa, aquele host. E você também recebe pessoas em casa!
Beatriz: Sim!
Virginia: E como que é essa experiência. Você já recebeu muitas pessoas em casa?
Beatriz: Já. Eu recebi umas seis, sete pessoas. Ainda não foi tanto quanto o tailandês. Mas cada experiência foi mais interessante que a outra, sabe? Recebi pessoas muito diferentes umas das outras, de nacionalidade diferentes.
Eu já recebi uma americana, um cara da Turquia, uma menina espanhola que já tinha viajado o mundo inteiro, brasileiros também, de São Paulo, de Minas e nem lembro mais. Mas, enfim, vêm pessoas de lugares muito diferentes.
E eu comecei a fazer na verdade porque eu descobri através de um amigo. Ele recebia pessoas e às vezes eu ía na casa dele e, “ei, tem um francês aqui”.
Virginia: Tem uma pessoa, do nada.
Beatriz: Um francês, ou “tem uma colombiana que veio aqui ficar uns dias”. Daí eu conhecia as pessoas e eu, “ah, olha que legal!” E daí eu comecei a ver, ah, tudo bem, tu não precisa ter uma super estrutura pra ter esse tipo de experiência. Se tu tiver um sofá ou um colchão, tá ótimo pra essas pessoas.
Então, eu vi que eu podia fazer também porque eu tinha um colchão inflável, e eu tinha uma sala disponível, então eu podia fazer. Daí eu comecei a receber as pessoas.
Daí a primeira vez foi meio assim, estava com um pouquinho de medo, né? Daí eu recebi uma carioca, e foi super legal. Foi bem legal. A menina era muito querida. Enfim foi, muitas experiências legais.
Virginia: Adorei! Obrigada por compartilhar a sua experiência com a gente.
