Brazilian VS European Portuguese: Vocabulary

In this lesson, you’ll learn a little about vocabulary differences between Portuguese spoken in Brazil and Portuguese spoken in Portugal.

To talk about this topic, I invited teacher Mia Esmeriz who is Portuguese and also teaches Portuguese as a second language. I’ve already made a video with Mia on this subject, but today we’re going to talk about different things.

These are the topics that we discuss in the video:

COMMUTING / PEGANDO TRANSPORTE

Brazilian Portuguese: “Eu vou pegar o ônibus/metrô para ir ao trabalho.”

European Portuguese: “Vou apanhar o autocarro/metro para o trabalho.”

English:I’m going to take the bus/subway to work.”

THROWING AWAY THE TRASH / JOGANDO O LIXO FORA

Brazilian Portuguese: “Você jogou o lixo fora?”

European Portuguese: “Deitaste o lixo fora?”

English: “Did you throw away the trash?”

WITHDRAWING MONEY / SACANDO DINHEIRO

Brazilian Portuguese: “Preciso sacar dinheiro no banco.”

European Portuguese: “Preciso de levantar dinheiro.”

English: “I need to withdraw money from the bank.”

COMPLIMENTING THE FOOD/ ELOGIANDO A COMIDA

Brazilian Portuguese: “Esta comida tem sabor bom.”

European Portuguese: “Esta comida sabe bem.”

English: “This food tastes good.”

Brazilian Portuguese: “Esta comida tem sabor de comida caseira.”

European Portuguese: “Esta comida sabe a comida caseira.”

English: “This food tastes good like homemade food.”

WORKING SPACE / AMBIENTE DE TRABALHO

Brazilian Portuguese: “Em minha escrivaninha tem isopor, grampeador e durex.”

European Portuguese: “Na minha secretária tem esferovite, agrafador e fita adesiva.”

English: “In my desk there are Styrofoam, stapler and adhesive tape.”

CALF PAIN / DOR NA PANTURRILHA

Brazilian Portuguese: “Estou com dor na panturrilha.”

European Portuguese: “Estou com dores nos gêmeos.”

English: “I have a pain in my calf. / My calf hurts.”

FLUSHING THE TOILET / DANDO DESCARGA

Brazilian Portuguese: “Quando for ao banheiro, não esqueça de dar descarga.”

European Portuguese: “Quando fores à casa de banho, não te esqueças de descarregar o autoclismo.”

English: “When you go to the bathroom, don’t forget to flush.”

GETTING A VACCINE / TOMANDO VACINA

Brazilian Portuguese: “Joãozinho tomou injeção no bumbum.”

European Portuguese: “Joãozinho levou uma pica no rabinho.”

English: “Joãozinho got a shot in his butt.”

ANSWERING THE PHONE/ ATENDENDO O TELEFONE

Brazilian Portuguese: “Alô”/ “Oi”.

European Portuguese: “Estou!”/ “tô!/ “Está”/”tá”.

English: “Hello!”

MEETING A FRIEND / ENCONTRANDO UMA AMIGA

Brazilian Portuguese: “Vou encontrar minha amiga no restaurante.”

European Portuguese: “Eu vou ter com a minha amiga ao restaurante.”

English: “I’m meeting my friend at the restaurant.”
