A very interesting thing about the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil is that we rarely use the word SIM (yes) to answer questions.

It’s important for you to know that you can use the word SIM. It’s not wrong. Quite the opposite. Saying “sim” is the most traditional way of answering questions in the affirmative way.

For example:

– Você gosta de viajar? (Do you like to travel?)

– Sim, eu gosto de viajar. (Yes, I do like to travel.)

However, in colloquial spoken language, Brazilians rarely answer questions using the word YES.

1. The most natural way to answer questions in Portuguese is simply using the verb.

This verb must be the same verb used in the question and must be conjugated in the same tense.

For example:

– Você gosta de viajar? (Do you like to travel?)

– Gosto. (I do.)

– Você viu a Maria na festa? (Did you see Maria at the party?)

– Vi. (I did.)

– Você vai ao cinema conosco? (Are you going to the movies with us?)

– Vou. (I am.)

– Posso entrar? (May I come in?)

– Pode. (You may.)

The use of the pronoun EU (I) is optional because it is implied by the context and conjugation of the verb.

2. We also use the word ISSO (that) in place of SIM (yes) when we want to agree with someone else or assert that they are correct.

ISSO (that) is a reduction of the sentence: “That’s true,” “That’s right.”

For example:

– Você é brasileira, não é? (You’re Brazilian, aren’t you?)

– Isso. (That’s right.)

– Sou. (I am.)

3. We can also use the word JÁ (already/yet/ever) instead of SIM (yes) if the question includes the word JÁ.

For example:

– Você já foi ao Brasil? (Have you ever been to Brazil?)

– Já. (I have)

– Ainda não. (Not yet.)

4. To answer questions in the negative form you can simply use the word NÃO (no) or the word NÃO (no) plus the verb.

For example:

– Você gosta de chocolate? (Do you like chocolate?)

– Gosto. (I do.)

– Não. (No.) or Não gosto. (I don’t.) Let’s see more examples:

1. Você gosta de comida brasileira? (Do you like Brazilian food?)

– Gosto. (I do.)

– Não gosto. (I don’t.)

2. Você estuda português todos os dias? (Do you study Portuguese every day?)

– Estudo. (I do.)

– Não estudo. (I don’t.)

3. Você tem amigos brasileiros? (Do you have Brazilian friends?)

– Tenho. (I do.)

– Não tenho. (I don’t.)

4. Seu melhor amigo é brasileiro? Sua melhor amiga é brasileira? (Is your best friend Brazilian?)

– É. (He is. She is.)

– Não é. (He isn’t. She isn’t.)

5. Você encontrou seus amigos na semana passada? (Did you meet your friends last week?)

– Encontrei. (I did.)

– Não encontrei. (I didn’t.)

6. Você aceita um cafezinho? (Would you like a cup of coffee?)

– Aceito, obrigada. (Yes, thanks.)

– Não, obrigada. (No, thank you.)

7. Você foi ao cinema ontem? (Did you go to the movies yesterday?)

– Fui. (I did.)

– Não fui. (I didn’t.)

8. Você estudou português ontem? (Did you study Portuguese yesterday?)

– Estudei. (I did.)

– Não estudei. (I didn’t.)

9. Você gostaria de ir ao Brasil? (Would you like to go to Brazil?)

– Gostaria. (I would.)

– Não gostaria. (I wouldn’t.)

10. Você vai estudar português amanhã? (Are you going to study Portuguese tomorrow?)

– Vou. (I will.)

– Não vou. (I won’t.)

11. Você já assistiu a este filme? (Have you ever watched this movie?)

– Já. (I have.)

– Ainda não. (Not yet.)

12. Seus amigos vieram à sua festa de aniversário? (Did your friends come to your birthday party?)

– Vieram. (They did.)

– Não vieram. (They didn’t.)
