How to say a complete date

This lesson was published on September 20, 2022. How would you say that in Portuguese?

Este vídeo foi publicado no dia vinte de setembro de dois mil e vinte e dois. (This video was published on September 20, 2022).

Note that we say and write dates in this order: day, month, and year.

When we say a complete date, we must use the preposition DE to connect the day to the month and the month to the year:

Vinte de setembro de dois mil e vinte e dois. (September 20, 2022)

Note that we always say the full year: dois mil e vinte e dois (two thousand and twenty-two).

Now let’s study how to say the day, month, and year separately.

What DAY is today?

To say the day of the month, we use the word “dia” (day) + the cardinal number. In Portuguese, we don’t use ordinal numbers to say dates. The only exception is the first day of the month.

For example:

Dia primeiro de setembro (September 1st)

Dia dois de setembro (“two” of September)

Dia três de setembro (“three” of September)

Dia dez de setembro (“ten” of September)

Let’s see examples in sentences:

  • Hoje é dia vinte. (Today is the twentieth.)
  • Amanhã é dia vinte e um. (Tomorrow is the twenty-first)
  • Eu vou viajar no dia trinta de setembro. (I will travel on September 30th.)

MONTHS of the year:

Let’s quickly review how to say the name of each month:

  • Janeiro (January)
  • Fevereiro (February)
  • Março (March)
  • Abril (April)
  • Maio (May)
  • Junho (June)
  • Julho (July)
  • Agosto (August)
  • Setembro (September)
  • Outubro (October)
  • Novembro (November)
  • Dezembro (December)

Note that the months must be written with lowercase initials in Portuguese unless they are at the beginning of a sentence.

When we want to say which month we are currently in, we use the verb ESTAR and the preposition EM. We can also say “no mês de” (in the month of).

Examples in the present tense:

  • Já estamos em setembro! (We are already in September!)
  • Estamos no mês de setembro. (We are in (the month of) September.)
  • Meu aniversário é em junho. (My birthday is in June.)
  • Meu aniversário é no mês de junho. (My birthday is in June.)
  • Meu aniversário é no dia vinte e cinco de junho. (My birthday is on June 25th.)

Examples in the future tense:

  • Vou viajar ao Brasil em dezembro. (I will travel to Brazil in December.)
  • Vou viajar ao Brasil no mês de dezembro. (I will travel to Brazil in December.)
  • Vou viajar ao Brasil no dia dez de dezembro. (I will travel to Brazil on December 10th.)

Examples in the past tense:

  • Eu viajei ao Brasil em janeiro. (I traveled to Brazil in January.)
  • Eu viajei ao Brasil no mês de janeiro. (I traveled to Brazil in January.)
  • Eu viajei ao Brasil no dia dez de janeiro. (I traveled to Brazil on January 10th.)

How to talk about the YEAR in Portuguese:

To say the year, we usually use the preposition EM + year or the phrase “no ano de” (in the year of) + year.

Examples in the present tense:

  • Estamos em dois mil e vinte e dois. (It ‘s twenty twenty-two.)
  • Estamos no ano de dois mil e vinte e dois. (It’s twenty twenty-two.)
  • Já é dois mil e vinte e dois! (It’s already twenty twenty-two.)

Examples in the future tense:

  • Carlos vai se formar em dois mil e vinte e quatro. (Carlos will graduate in 2024.)
  • Carlos vai se formar no ano de dois mil e vinte e quatro. (Carlos will graduate in 2024.)

Examples in the past tense:

  • Eu me mudei para os Estados Unidos em dois mil e treze. (I moved to the United States in 2013.)
  • Eu me mudei para os Estados Unidos no ano de dois mil e treze. (I moved to the United States in 2013.)
