I receive many questions about the words EMBAIXO, DEBAIXO and ABAIXO because the three words can be translated into English as “below,” but the use of these words is not quite the same.
In this lesson, I’m going to give you several examples for you to learn how to use these words.
EMBAIXO and DEBAIXO:
The words EMBAIXO and DEBAIXO are used to indicate something that is in a lower position or underneath something else.
- O livro está embaixo da mesa. (The book is under the table.)
- O livro está debaixo da mesa. (The book is under the table.)
- O livro está sob a mesa. (The book is under the table.)
“Embaixo” is the opposite of “em cima.”
- O livro está em cima da mesa. (The book is on the table.)
ABAIXO:
1. The word ABAIXO is used to indicate something that is at a lower location or towards a lower part.
We use this word to talk about direction or level. We don’t use this word to indicate something that is underneath something else:
- O carro desceu ladeira abaixo. (The car went downhill.)
- A temperatura está abaixo de zero. (The temperature is below zero.)
- Tem um riacho abaixo da minha casa. (There is a creek below my house.)
2. We use the word ABAIXO in emails and other texts:
- Envio abaixo as informações que você Deixe um comentário abaixo. (I’m sending below the information you requested.
3. We also use the word ABAIXO in interjections:
- Abaixo a ditadura! (Down with the dictatorship!)
4. “Abaixo” is the opposite of “acima:”
- O carro subiu ladeira acima. (The car went uphill.)
- A temperatura está acima de zero. (The temperature is above zero.)
- Tem uma montanha acima da minha casa. (There is a mountain above my house.)
EM BAIXO, DE BAIXO and A BAIXO:
In addition to the words EMBAIXO, DEBAIXO and ABAIXO, there are also the phrases EM BAIXO, DE BAIXO and A BAIXO (two words).
The meaning of these phrases is different from the words, although the pronunciation is the same.
1. EM BAIXO (two words) is the combination of the preposition “em” (in) and the word “baixo” (low/down). We use this phrase in many different contexts:
- Gosto de falar em baixo tom de voz para não atrapalhar meus colegas. (I like to speak in a low tone of voice so as not to disturb my colleagues.)
- Tem muitas esculturas em baixo relevo no museu. (There are many sculptures in bas-relief in the museum.)
2. DE BAIXO (two words) is the combination of the preposition “de” (from/of) and the word “baixo” (low/down). We use this phrase in many different contexts:
- Ela olhou para ele de baixo para cima. (She looked him up and down.)
- Eu não gosto de usar palavras de baixo nível. (I don’t like to use vulgar words.)
- O número da conta fica na parte de baixo. (The account number is on the bottom of the check.)
3. A BAIXO (two words) is the combination of the preposition “a” (to) and the word “baixo” (low/down). It means the same as PARA BAIXO. We use this phrase in many different contexts:
- Aquela loja vende roupas e calçados a baixo preço. (That store sells clothes and shoes at low prices.)
- Ela olhou para ele de cima a baixo. (She looked him up and down.)
