Infinitivo Pessoal ou Impessoal?
Olá, queridos alunos! (Hello, dear students!)
In response to many requests, our lesson today will be about the personal and impersonal infinitive.
What is the infinitive?
We use the term “infinitivo” (infinitive) to refer to the base form of a verb, usually ending in -ar, -er, or -ir, like “falar” (to speak), “comer” (to eat), and “assistir” (to watch).
The impersonal infinitive is used when the action does not have a specific subject.
For example:
É importante comer legumes. (It’s important to eat vegetables.)
The personal infinitive is used when we want to indicate who is performing the action.
For example:
É importante vocês comerem legumes. (It’s important for you all to eat vegetables.)
When we have two verbs together, one after the other, we must conjugate the first verb, and the second verb must remain in the impersonal infinitive. Since you’ve already conjugated the first verb, there’s no need to conjugate the second one.
For example:
Eles querem comer pizza. (They want to eat pizza).
How to Conjugate Verbs in the Infinitivo Pessoal
The good news is that the conjugation of the personal infinitive in Portuguese follows a regular pattern for all verbs, including irregular verbs. For the singular pronouns (eu, você, ele, ela, a gente), the conjugation is identical to the bare form of the verb. However, we must pay attention to the plural forms (nós, vocês, eles, elas), as they require specific endings. See the forms below:
Falar (to speak)
Eu falar (for me to speak)
Ele/Ela/Você falar (for him/her/you to speak)
Nós falarmos (for us to speak)
Eles/Elas/Vocês falarem (for them/you all to speak)
Ter (to have)
Eu ter (for me to have)
Ele/Ela/Você ter (for him/her/you to have)
Nós termos (for us to have)
Eles/Elas/Vocês terem (for them/you all to have)
